Hi opensuse-ppc
I have been chasing info to help me installing opensuse 11alpha3 (also tried alpha1 before I learnt that I could not) on my Playstation 3.
I have installed the "otherOS" bit, and I boot off the DVD, and when I see the penguin on the PS3 graphic, the PS3 freezes.
In alpha 1 I could change the loader parameters at the bottom of the screen, but in alpha 3 I cannot even do that, so i have not even been able to troubleshoot a bit to get decent error codes etc.
For starters, the DVD checksum of the
http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0-Alpha3/iso/torrent/openSUSE-11.0-Alpha3-DVD-ppc.torrent
iso is not posted on
http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version#Downloads
which would be nice to rule out that ktorrent did me a service and added some extra challenge in the iso file.

please help me get started;
Thomas

Well, Stefan changed some parts of the powerpc-utils into specific ps3
ones. I told him about.

I had to change some packages for alpha3 which were a little late for
alpha3. Give the following otheros.bld a try:

Thanks a lot - that definately got things started.
With the above kboot, the PS3 automatically kicks off the install on the dvd, and it installs, and it installs - but - there is always a but .

During installation of boot manager, I get an error, that I am sure I read about elsewhere, but cannot find again.
I get a white background window, with blue title bar, and black text saying:

Error occurred while installing ppc.

/usr/bin/stat: cannot stat '/boot/vmlinux': No such file or directory
/usr/bin/stat: cannot stat '/boot/vmlinux': No such file or directory
ERROR: can not find major:minor 0:0 for

Any hints? I sense I am almost there :-)

Thanks so far!

I have a faint idea what might be going on. /boot/vmlinux does not
exist, it might be called something like /boot/vmlinux-ps3. Before the
bootloader installation you might create a symlink ln -s
/boot/vmlinux-ps3 /boot/vmlinux. Please make a bug report and assign the
bug directly to me. That's the right way to handle it and keeps track of
progress.

If someone else sees the same, just try beta2, it installed with no glitches on my PS3 firmware 2.30 (40 gb version - no cardreader)
quite slow though - we should do as Yellow dog, and if low on memory, mount the swap as soon as the partitioning is done and use it during the installation.

Another funny observation - neither network card worked (wifi nor eth0) after install, I "configured" eth0 using yast, and it claimed need to install packages (kinternet etc), but only suggested to get them from internet, while the DVD was inserted, this is not practical, when configuring the network :-) kind of a catch 22. Running rcnetwork restart from a console allowed yast to finish, and it added channels and all kind of wonders.

Graphic kind of sucks though - the fonts on the desktop barely readable - I am in graphics mode 1080i. Any suggestions welcome :-)

Ok that brought me a bit in the right direction.
I grabbed the kboot off goeffs site
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-kboot/
and installed it, and now the PS3 launches to a kboot prompt??
By ( i assure you ) typing mistake, I discovered that YDL 6.0 install when pressing ctrl-D at the kboot prompt
after interrupting (ctrl+c)a command like awk -f ydboot2kboot.awk
No clue what all this means, but it looked like working and now at least I have YDL 6.0
Is there anything similar i can do to get OpenSUSE 11 alpha3 kickstarted to install (from the kboot prompt that is)?
Thomas
I had a very similar problem on my PS3 with the nightly-builds of ubuntu. I found out that there was a bug in that version of kboot used with ubuntu. I don't know if the same bug can be introduced in OpenSUSE. Have you had a look at the bugtrack too see if there are any know bugs with kboot in alpha3?
